Additional Details

first edition. The first publication of the comprehensive social code of New Spain decreed by the Third Mexican Concilium in 1585. Largely concerned with missionary activities and the rights of the Indians. Each source collates this work differently, but this copy has an additional 3-page Juan de la Serna dedication which was apparently not seen by Medina, Palau, or Sabin. Medina, Mexico 343; Palau 58835; Sabin 48373 ("extremely rare"); Szewczyk, 39 Books and Broadsides Printed in America Before the Bay Psalm Book, 29.
Bound with two later publications of the first three councils: Concilios Provinciales Primero y Segundo Concilium Mexicanum Provinciale III. Marginal worming. Mexico, 1769-70. "This collection of Mexican Councils is of importance as containing those of 1555 and 1565, nowhere else to be found"--Sabin. Medina, Mexico 5299, 5361; Palau 142387 (but here lacking Palau's final "Doce cartas"); Sabin 42063, 42064.
